Le Puy-en-Velay, pilgrimage city and jewel of Velay
Welcome to Le Puy-en-Velay, a spectacular city built in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes, famous for its religious heritage and unique landscapes. A true starting point of the Way of Saint James, this historic city is an invitation to travel between spirituality, nature and grandiose architecture.
An exceptional heritage listed by UNESCO
Le Puy-en-Velay fascinates with its Corneille rock, on which sits the majestic statue of Notre-Dame de France, offering a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding mountains. At the foot of this promontory, the Notre-Dame-du-Puy cathedral, listed by UNESCO, seduces with its Romanesque architecture and remarkable mosaics. Another emblematic site: the Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe chapel, perched at the top of an 82-meter volcanic peak, accessible after an impressive climb of 268 steps. Our little tip, during your stay, enjoy the historical show "Le Puy de Lumières", which illuminates the emblematic monuments of the city at nightfall.
A magnificent nature ideal for hiking
Le Puy-en-Velay is the starting point of the Way of Saint James, but it is also surrounded by exceptional hiking trails, particularly in the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.
A cuisine with a local flavour
Local specialties will delight gourmets such as Puy green lentils, the region's flagship product, or Velay verbena, an aromatic liqueur.
