Sommières, medieval jewel between Cévennes and Camargue

Welcome to Sommières, a town with a rich medieval past, nestled between the Cévennes reliefs and the Languedoc plain, a few kilometers from Nîmes and Montpellier. Famous for its feudal castle, its Roman bridge still in use and its lively Provencal market, it offers a unique experience combining history, nature and the sweetness of life.

A preserved medieval center
Sommières is dominated by its 10th century castle, which overlooks the town and offers an exceptional panorama of the valley. Its narrow streets, vaulted passages and Renaissance buildings bear witness to a past rich in trade and traditions. As you stroll through the historic heart, you will come across the old city gate, a vestige of the ramparts that once protected Sommières from invasions. Right next door, the covered market, dating from the 19th century, is still a vibrant place where local producers come to offer their cheeses, olives and wines. We recommend that you visit the Roman Bridge, a spectacular structure built under the Emperor Tiberius, still used today, and admire the medieval houses on arcades, typical of the south of France.

A nature between scrubland and river
Sommières is surrounded by diverse landscapes, between Mediterranean scrubland, vineyards and holm oak forests. Take a canoe and set off on the Vidourle, which crosses the town and offers a refreshing setting to discover the local wildlife.

A gastronomy between Cévennes terroir and Camargue flavors
The local cuisine oscillates between Languedoc traditions and Camargue influences, with specialities such as gardianne de taureau, simmered in a red wine and aromatic herb sauce.
